Fly Tipping – Check Your Waste Collector

As part of our ongoing efforts to tackle fly-tipping, the Parish Council wants to highlight a recent incident in Northamptonshire that serves as a vital reminder for us all.

A local resident was recently fined after employing an unregistered waste collector who subsequently fly-tipped their refuse. Under UK law, householders have a legal “Duty of Care” to ensure their waste is disposed of correctly. If you hire someone to take away your rubbish and they dump it illegally, you can be held legally responsible and face a significant fine.

How to protect yourself and the village:
If you are paying someone to remove waste from your home—whether it’s old furniture, garden waste, or DIY rubble—please ensure they are a registered waste carrier. Before handing over your rubbish (and your cash), remember to:

  1. Check their license: Ask to see their Environment Agency waste carrier license, or check it directly online via the Environment Agency register.
  2. Keep a record: Note down their name, vehicle registration number, and ask for a receipt or waste transfer note.
  3. Use official channels: For large items, consider using the official West Northamptonshire Council bulky waste collection service or taking it to a registered household waste recycling centre.

By taking just a couple of minutes to check, you can protect yourself from a fine and help keep our Northamptonshire lanes clear of illegal dumping.

Thank you for your continued support in keeping Helmdon beautiful.
