Helmdon + Turweston = Whistley 2000 Scout Troup
Around 1981 Dr Tony Holden started the current Helmdon Scout troop which was also open to children living outside the village.
Until recent years this group was for boys only but it is now also open to girls. It provides scouts, beavers, cub scouts and explorers with the opportunity to belong to the largest youth organisation in the world.
Our Helmdon children are privileged to work with dedicated leaders who introduce them to the fun and adventure of camping, abseiling and climbing, sailing and rafting and teach them many other life skills.
On September 8th 2000, the 1st Helmdon and 1st Turweston Scout Groups merged to create the mighty Whistley Group (after the wood which sits at the centre between our two villages).
This has created a strong group to provide scouting to a large area with members from Abthorpe in the north, Moreton Pinkney, Culworth and Greatworth to the west, Westbury in the east and Brackley in the south, in addition to our base villages of Helmdon and Turweston. We have an excellent base on which to build a strong leadership team and successful Scout Group in its very own headquarters at Chapel Lane, Turweston. Strong links with both base villages have been maintained.
The group continues to offer lots of new opportunities to our young people (both boys and girls). We do, however, need more leaders to carry this great initiative forward so if you can spare even a small amount of time to run a session or offer some specialist interest training, please contact us.
